BUNGOMA May 8, 20120 – Bungoma County was this weekend crowned the champions of Vestergaard
Frandsen Football tournament held at
Kakamega High School Grounds after
trouncing Busia County in a highly charged encounter.
The 120 - min match, played
in relatively friendly weather, kicked
off after 1.00pm with the teams taking
on each other with zeal. This was the highlight of the Vestergaard
Frendsen sponsored tourney organised to
create a awareness on the importance of drinking clean water using the
Lifestraw™ water purifiers.
The two teams held each other to defensive plays with numerous
missed chances that bore a
non-productive first half of the game for the fans for both sides. The
enthusiastic fans were treated to a rewarding spectacle with beautiful game
displays from the young players of the teams which comprised selected players put together from
different primary schools in the four
participating counties. Four players were earmarked as the ‘best football
talent’ from each county during the
tournament in what organizers say is deliberate attempt to nurture talent in
the region. The four players include: Rooney Sichenje from Bungoma County,
Philips Onyango from Busia County, Mandela Kulondo from Kakamega County and
Brian Onzere from Vihiga County.
The second half of the game began on a more electrifying display
with players demonstrating a variety of skills
with the hope of carrying the
day. The teams relentlessly put up a spirited fight in search of goals but all was in vain
closing the second half on a barren draw. At this point, fans were continuously
tensed as anxiety grew by the
minute mush as it became evident that the
game was set for penalties. Roars and cheers from Machina, Isikhuti, Zangalewa and Kamaliza Sounds entertained the
crowds throughout the game rousing the perceive titans to an equally frustrating stand-off during
the penalties after the two teams tied 4 - 4. This prompted the referee to preside
over the second round which saw Bungoma
emerge winners with a 5 - 4 score line.
Earlier, Kakamega county played Vihiga Country in the day’s curtain
raiser match that so the hosts (Kakamega
County) beat their semi finals rival Vihiga to a 3 – 2 victory. The match was
largely pulsating with crowds chanting praises of the hosts Kakamega, amid
rounding sounds of Isikuti and Zankalewa tunes.
Vestergaard Frandsen Regional
Manager Mr. Steve Otieno said the tournament was part of the VF activities
aimed at sensitizing school going children on safe drinking water and also use children as agents of change to
influence positive behaviour within their respective communities.
“
We are committed to ensuring that every family here lives a healthy life which
we are propagating through sports and provision of sustainable solutions like
the Lifestraw filters, “said Mr Otieno.
The
winners took home a championship trophy, medals
and branded Lifestraw Merchandise and certificates of recognition.
